In March 2022, the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute caught Georgia Blue for hawksbill-specific research.  As long as it lasts, there's an "Ei4" etched/painted on its carapace (NOAA permit #21260).
"George Floyd" is a deceased juvenile hawksbill that was found washed ashore by Cindy Hutler & Carrie DeMott in 2021.  Under NOAA permit #21260, Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute responded and is holding it until it can be necropsied by NOAA.  We decided to name it “George Floyd”, due to the possibility that it drowned (since there weren't external signs of deadly injury).

I don’t often include deceased individuals if they haven’t already been documented alive, but I’m including George Floyd out of respect, to honor his memory and offer support for Black Lives Matter social justice movements.  We need to spread awareness about the illegal fishing practices that are far too common locally and globally.  Sea turtles can hold their breath for hours on their terms, but not if struggling in a net!

Lay gill nets are illegal on Maui!  Please call DOCARE immediately if discovered: 643-DLNR.
Hawaiian Islands' fishing regulations are found:  https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dar/fishing/fishing-regulations/gear-restrictions/
Please call the NOAA statewide marine animal response hotline with any sea turtle emergencies: 1-888-256-9840.
